I first started exploring these stylized bokeh effect pieces 10 years ago in an attempt to experiment with abstract elements and design. At the time, someone told me they found it distracting from the subject. I persisted in the exploration of the effect, and to my delight every piece I’ve done in this manner has found a buyer that loves it, however I do believe it is a love it or hate it thing. Does it work in every case? Maybe not. This is the challenge in scratching in elements without a photographic reference and no way of painting over anything that you change your mind about without it looking like a hot mess. It’s a one and done exercise. The challenge is trying to mimic where the bokeh would be, what value it would take on, and how to incorporate it in a somewhat pleasing composition. It was never meant to be pure realism, but rather a blend between realism and the abstract. This particular piece is expanding upon a similar artwork I created where water provides the out of focus light points. This time, a common goldeneye provides the subject, set on backlit water that envelops around it.
