Winter Solstice

As winter sets in, the blue jays come out of the depths of the woods to my property in droves, feasting on seeds and nuts. With their remarkable tenacity and almost pompous behavior, they lord over the area here, keeping a close watch on everything around. Incredibly intelligent and one of the most beautifully underrated of our birds in Ontario, I love watching their dominance hierarchy and theatrics with each other. I chose this bird to represent the winter solstice as it's a species I've long associated with it by their abundant presence this time of year. I wanted this piece to have that moody, low angle of the sun feeling, to represent the shortest day of the year.
