The Finer Things

As I'm often exploring marshes in search of amphibians and reptiles, I will sometimes encounter marsh wrens hopping about the cattails. These enchanting little birds are a favorite of mine, but they are so sneaky at remaining hidden in the marsh vegetation. The best time to watch them is in spring when they are nest building. Males construct a sturdy enclosed nest out of grasses and cattail leaves, leaving the females to the more delicate embellishments. She will line the nest with smaller grasses, feathers and downy cattail fluff. This piece was a compilation of several photos. I wanted the cattail leaves to be minimal, creating a somewhat abstract element to the composition.
