Part of my property has a small strip of wetland running through it. Willows and dogwood occupy much of the space along with other typical wetland plants. Almost every day I walk this section looking for unique invertebrates that I don’t encounter in the drier meadows. I’m always delighted when I find the willow calligrapher beetle (Calligrapha multipunctata). These beetles are about the size of a ladybug, roughly ¼ inch long. Calligrapha refers to the highly variable calligraphy-like markings exhibited by this entire genera of beetles. Multipunctata refers to this species having multiple spots or punctuated markings. With all this in mind, I created my beetle using some of the typical punctuation we use in writing. See if you can find all 5!
