Nature's Imperfections

Everything about this piece goes against how I would have normally chosen to depict an elephant, but hey, I never claimed to be a mainstream wildlife artist! This particular elephant resides at the San Diego Zoo. I was immediately struck by the fact that its right tusk grew backwards. Having worked with elephants I know that tusk "imperfections" are quite common - so much so that maybe they are not imperfections at all. I have seen elephants with tusks at awkward angles use them to their advantage as places to wedge flakes of hay while they pick off bits with their trunk. In order to focus on the odd tusk, I chose to allow the viewer to see the animal from it’s blindside.
