Morning Dew

This piece was inspired by my early morning walks in the fields across from my home. I was constantly entranced with the backlit spiderwebs covered in dew. I had always wanted to do an artwork with this in mind but was looking to add a bird to the scene grasping the stalks of tall meadow grass. I could never get a photo of a bird in the position I wanted. Thankfully, I found the pose I had been looking for through the photography of fellow artist Sandra Blair who graciously allowed me to use her Eastern Kingbird as a reference for this artwork.
I had the pose of the bird, but not the rest of the scene, so I cut some grasses, studied the curl of the leaves and made up the rest as I went. The goal was to challenge my ability at recreating the scene of strong early morning rim light on the top elements while fading gradually to a combination of soft backlight and ambient light below, without the aid of reference photos for this.
