Lines and Light

I have been fortunate enough to see Common eider ducks both on the North shore of the St. Lawrence River and the tip of the Gaspe peninsula at Forillon National Park. To me, they are one of the most striking of sea birds. This threatened species is particularly vulnerable and is declining rapidly due to several pressure points, including increasing encroachment of human activity, disease, predation, over harvesting and the decline in abundance of their primary food source, blue mussels, due to climate change.
This artwork came together in a most relaxing manner, and I can’t say that about every piece I work on. As I carefully worked on the elements, I kept thinking to myself, “it needs more lines and more light”, and so, that mantra ultimately became the title. In essence, every board comes together line by line, layers of cross hatching, light lines, deeper lines, more lines…the careful revealing of the clay underneath allows the light to appear slowly and deliberately.
