This piece was inspired by the dozens of chickadees that surround my property in winter. I was outside watching them one day at the feeders and noticed them going up to the edge of the steel roof where they would hang upside down and drink small drops of water from the frozen ice edge on the roof. I’d never considered birds drinking drops of water from ice before, but since then I’ve watched them do it countless times, drinking from icicles on branches etc. Most people assume birds have a hard time finding water in the dead of winter, but I’ve even seen them eating snow. Drinking from melting ice makes sense as they don’t have to travel far, expending precious energy on very cold days to find open water sources. Once again, this composition started with the photo of the chickadee in a different setting, the icy branches were added based loosely on having done ice before a few times in previous artworks.
