It was a peaceful pre-dawn morning on a local river in my kayak. The first rays of light were glancing over the mist as it rose from the water, creating an ethereal scene. The silence was serene as I headed upriver, the channel narrowing as the wetland closed in around me. A tell-tale splashing had me quickly grab my camera. I expected beavers or muskrats, common here, but was delighted to see a pair of river otters gliding through the still waters in front of me. Curious, they studied my presence, swimming back and forth in front of me. Then they headed to the water’s edge for cover. I delighted in watching them watching me, peeking through the vegetation to see what I was up to.
My photos turned out somewhat blurry – not surprising given the low light and bobbing of the kayak, but I knew the quality of the backlighting on the surface of the water would make for a great scratchboard. Filling in the details came together smoothly. A few well-placed water droplets, and this board turned out just how I imagined.
